The History of the BMW Brand
BMW which is the short form for Bayerische Motoren Werke AG in Dutch and Bavarian Motor Works in English is an automotive company which was born from Rapp Motorenwerke.
Pronounced as /Beh-Em-Vee/ instead of /Bee-Em-Double U/, it is a German company specialized in automobile and motorcycle manufacturing and headquartered in Munich, Germany.
BMW as a company name is often referred to as Bimmer, Bee-em and Beemer representing the cars and motorcycles it produces for consumers worldwide; these words are used as a patois in English.
The slogan for the German automaker is “The Ultimate Driving Machine” and its first appearance and usage was in the 1970s (1974 precisely) in the American continent. While there was a slogan detour in 2010 to “Joy”, a deliberate attempt to make the brand more tempting, interesting and captivating to ladies and women worldwide, BMW chose to return to its original slogan (“The Ultimate Driving Machine”) just 2 years afterwards. It is unsure why the slogan was reverted from “Joy” to “The Ultimate Driving Machine”.
What stands out as a household insignia is BMW’s logo; a small, circular disc which was initially pulled from Rapp Motorenwerke, the company from which BMW was formed. To represent its founding place, the colors of the Bavarian flag (blue and white) were used on this small circular disc also known as a roundel. This became BMW’s logo in 1917 and this same logo has been in use ever since with minute stylistic changes in the following years: 1933, 1953, 1963 and 1997.
Font style changes (1933, 1953, 1963, 1997), font color changes (1953), color shade changes (1933, 1953, 1963, 1997) and 3D styling (1997) are some of the stylistic changes that have been made to the BMW’s logo since its first use date. These changes reflect a never-ending drive for progression with the times while staying true to its slogan. The recent logo looks like you can feel it from a screen and has a more mature look than its predecessors.
